POLICE COURT NEWS.

THEFT ADMITTED BY A GIRL. Four charges of theft of jewellery and articles of wearing apparel to the value of £19 10s from dwellings at Avondale were preferred against Alice Brown and her juvenile daughter in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M. Tho girl admitted stealing all but a few of the articles, but the mother pleaded not guilty, asserting that he did not know the stolen goods were in her house. After hearing considerable evidence the magistrate dismissed the charge against the mother, and adjourned tho case against the girl until February 9 to enable the juvenile probation officer to report upon the girl's conduct and home surroundings. Mr. H. H. Ostler appeared for both defendants.

George Molloy pleaded guilty to deserting from his ship, and was convicted and ordered to pay 7g Court fees, and £2 3s, the expense incurred by the steamship company in replacing him. Ellen Draper, a 16-year-old girl, who had given her parents some trouble and had refused to remain at the Door of Hope when placed there, was committed to tho Te Oranga Home in Canterbury.
