POLICE COURT NEWS.

RESERVIST FAILS TO ENROL. A MAN named Alfred J. Hunt, when charged at, the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., pleaded guilty to failing to enrol in the Expeditionary Force Reserve. Defendant said he had filled in the form, and asked some children to post his papers, but he heard nothing more about it. He had previously volunteered, but had been rejected after being in camp. He produced his discharge. Defendant was fined IDs and 7s costs.

A charge of being an idle and disorderly person was denied dv Ellen Draper. Constable Taylor said the girl had previously been in the Door of Hope by arrangement with her mother, but she escaped and went to Tuakau. She obtained work there, but two days later she left, taking a horse with her. Witness ascertained that she had spent two nights in the Maori pa. The matron of the Door of Hope would not take her back. When she was leaving one place a lot of her employer's clothes were found packed in the girl's box. The case was adjourned till to-morrow for the attendance of the girl's mother. A young girl was charged with the theft of a cigarette-case, a pair of gloves, and a fountain-pen. Chief-Detective McMahon paid the girl came from the country, and while employed at a city boardinghotiso she stole the articles mentioned in the charge. It appeared to be an impulsive theft, as the girl bore an excellent character. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months, conditionally upon her returning to the countrv. Claude Reilly, for being drunk and breaking the * terms of his prohibition order, was fined 10s. Six first offenders for drunkenness were deait with.
