TOWN SAID TO BE IN RUJN3.
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, (Reed. 8.55 p.m.) . BRISBANE, Jan. 28. 1 All efforts to reach Mackay and the i districts isolated by flood have so far j proved futile. It is understood that I Bowen missed the hurricane, but the S traffic has been interrupted by the floods, i the bridges being washed away. The j telegraphic dislocation continues. Clonj curry district is now isolated. The I Federal Government has donated £5000 j for relief purposes. ! The latest news from Mackay states j that the town is in ruins. There is no ' gas or water supply, and the town is ' under police control. Heaiy rain is still falling. The master of the steamer Tarawatta reports that he remained in the vicinity, but saw no sign of the town, only a vast sheet of water. It is feared that a calamity of enormous magnitude ■ has befallen Mackay, with appalling loss j of life.
