ANNIVERSARY DAY.

HOLIDAY IN AUCKLAND.

WEATHER UNFAVOURABLE. The 78th observance yesterday of Anniversary Day in Auckland was somewhat marred by the weather conditions. Throughout the day the sky was overcast, and there were occasional light showers, though these did not last long enough to make it unpleasant for outdoor holiday, makers. A north-easterly wind went somi» way towards cooling the otherwise humid atmosphere. The principal attractions were the anniversary regatta, successfully carried out on the Waitemata, and the concluding day's races of the Takapusia Jockey Club's Summer Meeting. The former was witnessed by large numbers of spectators from the flagship, from vessels cruising in the harbour, and from the northern and southern waterfronts. The races at Takapuna attracted thousands of enthusiasts. At Eden Park the second day of the Auckland-Wellington cricket match proved an attraction to many, and on various bowling greens tournaments were played. The Railway Department ran special trains to Helensville in connection with the show at that place, and these were well patronised. No extra trains ran to Hamilton for the regatta, but the ordinary trains running from Auckland to the Waikato centre were well filled. The picnio traffic on the Henderson line was, fairly heavy. The weather had some effect also on the water excursions, but fairly large crowds visited the gulf resorts, the heaviest passenger traffic being to Takapuna. The various places of amusement in the city were well patronised both in the afternoon and evening. A close holiday was observed by the business people, banks, insurance companies, Stock Ex« change, and shops, only retailers of refreshments remaining open.
