BRITISH WIN TRENCHES NEAR THIEPVAL.
LINE STRAIGHTENED AND POSITION IMPROVED. GERMAN COUNTER-ATTACKS REPULSED WITH HEAVY LOSS. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (EeceiTcd 7 p.m.) LONDON. August 23. A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: " South of Thiepval we gained a further 200 yds of German trenches, straightened our line, and improved our^ position. The enemy's artillery has been silenced in three different ■ areas by our heavy guns. Two determined enemy counter-attacks south of Thiepval were repulsed, one after a temporary footing had been gained in our trenches. The enemy's losses were heavy. Hostile artillery fire has increased in violence, especially at High Wood and Bazentin-1 Petit." A French communique states: " A heavy artillery duel has proceeded all night north and south of Maurepas. The Germans, after intense artillery preparation, attacked southward of Estrees and westward of Soyecourt, and penetrated at some points the trenches we had conquered. Later German attacks south of Estrees and south-west of Soyecourt were defeated."
