NIUE SOLDIERS' GRATITUDE.
TESTIMONIAL TO CAPTAIN HART.
The master of the Corinthic, Captain Hart, has' been presented with a testimonial from the Nine Island soldiers who recently returned to New Zealand, expressing their gratitude, for kindness shown them on the long voyage. There is a quaint simplicity and charm that is expressive in the testimonial, without being in any way fulsome, and Captain Hart is sure that it reflected the feelings of the Islanders.
The —which was translated by Lieutenant Macdonald, who returned in charge of the men—reads as follows:—
"To the captain of the Shipthe Just Chief of all things pertaining to the Ship. —Our great love to you for the way you have treated us since the beginning of the voyage from England on •Line 17 to the end of the trip. We are very pleased for all the things that you have remembered us with ; we have never had to ask you for anything. You allowed us to attend the three concerts, which wo all enjoyed. You arranged for deck games for us, including cricket, and which pleased us very much. " We had clean white cabins and comfortable beds.
" We had plenty of room, to walk about the deck and enjoy ourselves there. " We were all very pleased with the food provided. "We wish that you be blessed in every way on your various journeys. " Our great love to you. To all the officers, to the doctor, and to the others who toil on the ship. " Our thanks to you : our love to you : our thanks for giving us plenty, for looking after us. and for our generosity at all times."
