BROKEN GERMAN PROMISE SHIPS SUNK AT SIGHT. SEVEN CASES ESTABLISHED. Reuter. LONDON. August 15. Speaking in the House of Lords, j the Marquis of Crewe stated that since Germany had promised the i United States not to sink ships with- I out warning four British and three : neutral ships had been sunk, and altogether 46 lives lost in clear vio- ■ lation of the undertaking. There were other cases where a breach of the undertaking was highly probable, but there was no definite j proof. j The Marquis of Crewe added that when the allien had decided how to deal with the situation the Government would make a declaration of policy. He feared threats to punish individuals by confiscating German ships, and money would not persuade the German Govern- j ment to desist illegally sinking inter- | national vessels. ' ! ■■ TORPEDOES AND BOMBS. NEUTRAL VESSELS LOST. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. COPENHAGEN. August 15. A Zeppelin bombed the Swedish steamer Norland, bound from Middlesborough. Bombs dropped to the ship, but little damage was done. British destroyers chased the airship, firing heavily at it. The Germans also set fire to the Swedish ship Pepita, which was taking a cargo of sleepers to Sunderland. The crew were saved. The Danish steamer Ivar, 2139 tons, was torpedoed by a submarine.
