END OF EAST AFRICAN CAMPAIGN IN SIGHT.
GENERAL SMUTS MAKES PHENOMENAL PROGRESS.
CONQUEST ATTENDED BY MANY DIFFICULTIES. Australian and N.Z. Cable. 'Received 7 pin > DURBAN". August 15. Genera] Botha. Premier of South Africa, was interviewed on his return from East Africa. He said the remaining German forces were being " kraallcd." Only one end was possible, and that was not far distant. In addition to the arduousness of operating in almost impenetrable forests, sickness had been rampant, among the men and animals. The distances were enormous. The German native levies were admirably led, and were fine fighters, while the machine-gun detachments were worthy of respect. Notwithstanding these obstacles, General Smuts's progress has been phenomenal.
