NEW FREEZING WORKS.
ERECTION AT WHAEL4TANE. [BY telegraph.— correspondent.] Whakatane, Thursday. The contractor for the erection of the East Coast co-operative freezing works, Mr. Prank Amoore, paid a visit to Whakatane this week, to make final arrangements for commencing operations. Mr. Amoore said he considered the site a capital one. It had an excellent waterfront and would provide easy facilities for working. He intended to make a temporary wharf for delivery of material and to erect a permanent wharf later. The buildings would be built of reinforced concrete and would be fire-proof. The works, including machinery, but not including lighters, would cost approximately £100,000. He expected the material to be on the ground about the end of next month, and he would then be ready to commence building. He would employ 70 i builders, or more if it were possible to 1 secure them. He expected to have the ; works far enough advanced for the company to start limited killing in February next, although they will not be finally completed till about Way. The works would cover an area of about six acres, and would be one of the most up-to-date and best-equipped in the Dominion. The 1 slaughterhouses would have a. daily capacity of 200 head of cattle and 1000 sheep. The freezing chamber would have a storage capacity for 85,000 carcases. Manure works, fellmongery, wool store, meat-pre-serving works and cool store were other departments.
