EEMUERA AND CITY.
QUESTION OF TREATMENT.
CONDITION OF THE ROADS.
CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION.
The treatment received by the Reniuera district at the hands of the City Council since the amalgamation of the suburban district with the city was the subject of a brief discussion at last night's meeting of the council. The matter came up during consideration of the Works Committee's report. One clause of this recommended that a letter which had been referred to the committee from Mr. ritzroy Peacocke, drawing attention to the state of repair of many of the roads in Remuera, should bo received. The city engineer, reporting on the communication, stated that he had already recommended that the sum of £3400 should bo expended in renewing and completing the kerbing and channelling in Remuera Road, from Newmarket to Mountain Road, and had suggested that the council should, if possible, find this sum and allow the street to be coated with metal <"»s the work proceeds. In the Komucra district the following improvement work had already been done or was in progress :—Mount Hobson Road, Green Lane, Woodbine Avenue, Kelvin Road, and Vincent Road- An adequate proportion of the total amount allocated for roadmaking in the whole of the city will also be spent during the. current" year in the Remuera district. A total of 57 additional street lamps had been provided, and provision had been made for 12 extra lamps for the current year. Mr. J. Deropsey said he thought Mr. Peacocke was entitled to a more courteous reply to his letter. Mr. S. M. Moore Jones concurred. Remuera. he said, was becoming a sort of joke. When Remuera came into the city there was a lot of talk about what was going to be done for the district. Now, when anything was asked on behalf of Remuera, those who made the request had a lot of data "fired at them." He considered that proper attention was not given to Remuera when the estimates were considered. He thought that when Kemuera people complained they were J hm! a U1 " s0 doin K- If the council had not the money to carry out works that might be asked for applicants should be so informed in a proper and reasonable manner. The Acting-Mayor, Mr. A J. Entrican, said the writer of the letter under notice spoke of the unsatisfactory state of the roads in Remuera, a generalisation which was uncalled for. True, several promises were made to Remuera prior to the amalgamation. Even some of the present representatives of Remuera on the council had made promises. A good deal had been done for Remuera, At present, the people of that district should realise, it was not possible to raise money for new works. It was the wish of the council to spend all available money, and to help Remuera in every way possible. Nothing discourteous to Mr. Peacocke was intended in the recommendation of the committee to merely Teceive his letter. Mr. G. W. Murray said he had been one of the advocates of the amalgamation, and he was- not at all disappointed at the result. Judging by the work since done in Remtiera, there was good hope of the district being a credit to the city. Mr. P. J. Nerheny claimed that he was as much a Remuera representative as Messrs. Dempsey and 'Moore-Jones, and as anxious to see Remuera get as fair play as other districts. It was only since the city gave Remuera 57 new, street lamps that light was shed on the state <£ the district's roads. (Laughter.) Full justice had been done to Remuera. The clause was then adopted.
