PRICES ADVANCE IN LONDON.

J Wellington, Monday. I In his report, dated London, January 8, tile High Commissioner states :— Butter: The- market is firm, with increasing demand. Prices for salted have recovered from 4s to 6s. Owing to French I "port prohibition, tho market advanced jforunsalted from 6s to 8s during the . week. Danish, 154s to 160s, New Zealand 146s to 150s, unsalted 154 a to 160s, fair to good quality 140s to 1435; Australian, | 140s to 1465, unsalted 150s to 1545; Siberian, quiet, 124s to 1325; Argentine, loßs to 140s, unsalted 146s to 1525. Cheese: The market is firm, and prices continue to advance, Canadian, white and coloured, 965, occasionally 98s; English Cheddar. 104s to 106s; Cheshire, 108s to 112s; New Zealand, in good demand, prices firm at close of market, white and coloured 95s to 955. On January 3 the estimated Canadian and United States cheese stocks at London, Liverpool and Bristol totalled 166,000 boxes, again*! 171,000 boxes last year. New Zealand and Australian cheese in stock at London and Bristol totalled 14,000 crates, against 16,000 crates last year. LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S" REPORT. FROZEN MEAT PRICES ADVANCED. [BT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION. J Wellington. Monday. The High Commissioner's cable, dated January 8, is as follows, quotations, unless otherwise specified, being average prices on spot: MEAT. Good demand continues, with higher prices for all descriptions of frozen meat, owing to short supply, although supplies of home-killed have increased. Mutton: Canterbury, 7£d for any weight. Only a small quantity available. North Island, quotations not available; ewes, very brisk demand; average price, 6|d, but sometimes as high as 7d. Lamb: Market, firm. Prices continue to advance. Canterbury twos and fours, 7§d; second grade. 7|d"; other than Canterbury not quoted. Beef: New Zealand cow beef hinds, 6-|d; fores, 5Jd; chilled hinds, 6id; fores, 6|d. HEMP. Manila, advanced again, largely on account of the freight difficulty, and prices for New Zealand are firmer in sympathy. Inquiry is made chiefly for early shipment. Manila, new graded £50; New Zealand, good fair £40 10s fair £38 10s for February to April shipment. " TOW. , Market is very firm. Business has been done at first grade, £23 10s; second grade, £22 10s; third grade, unobtainable. Output from Manila for the week was 22,000 bales. WHEAT. Market remains firm, and good demand continues. Canadian on spot, 645; Jan-uary-March shipment, 62s 6d; Australian, January to March shipment by steamer, 64s 6d, sailer 62s 6d. OATS. The market is quiet, but firm. Argentine on spot, 335; January-March ship- ' ment, 32s 6d. WOOL. The market is strong. QUOTATIONS FOR TALLOW. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London office, under date January s:— Tallow: We quote present spot values for the following descriptions:—Fine mutton, 51s per cwt; good beef, 50s per cwt; muted, 47s 6d per cwt. There is a good market. CHRISTCHUPvCH WOOL SALES GOOD SORTS FIRMER. [by TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christcjht-rch, Monday. The, third wool sale of this season's series started to-day, when 22,285 bales were offered to a large attendance of buyers. Ihe offerings included a large number of good station halfbred and Merino clips. There was keen competition from Bradford-. French, and local buyers. American buyers did not operate "in view of the ! fact that the Government has intimated ' that no further licenses will be issued for the export of crossbred wool to neutral countries. Compared with the December sale, super fine halfbred wool showed an advance of about one-halfpennv, medium halfbred was rather firmer, shabbv about one-halfpenny sier. Bright crossbred and three-quartei-bred fully maintained late rates. Medium and discoloured were rather easier. Inferior was three-farthings to one penny down. There was a good demand for best Merino, both among outside buyers and local woollen mills. Looks and pieces sold well up to late rates. The range of prices during the day was: Merino. 9?d to 17£ d; super halfbred, 16J.d to 19|d; medium, 13id to 16d; inferior, 12£ d to 13d; super Corriedale, 16Jtd to 19|d: medium and inferior, 14d to 16d; super three-quarter-bred, 14£ dto 17Jd; medium and inferior. 10|d to 14^-d ; super crossbred. 14|d to 17^d: medium, 12|d to 14d: inferior, lid to 12d; longwool, 16d to 16id: Merino 3 pieces, 9d to 14^d; halfbred pieces, 10id to 18id; crossbred nieces, 8d to 13|d: locks and crutchinsrs, 5Ad to 9d: scoured halfbred. 24|d to 263 d ; pieces, 21Jd to 253 d; locks, 16d; crutchings, 18d.

Apples, choice dessert, 6s to 7s a case, prime 5s to 5s 6d, cookers, choice, 4s 6d to 5s a case; plums, choice dessert favourites, 4s to 4s 5d a half-case, prime 2s 6d to 3s 6d ; nectarines, choice, 5s to 6s a half-case ; black currants, 7s 6d to 8s a half-case; tomatoes, choice 7s to 8s a half-case, prime 5s to 6s ; apricots, 6s to 7s; passions, 6s to 7s a box; loganberries. 5d to 6d per lb ; potatoes, choice, 7s to 7a 6d per cwt; onions, 7s to 83 per cwt; eggs, Is 4d per dozen.
