THE BREEDING OF NGATOA.
In my notes of Wednesday mention was made of a doubt being cast on the accuracy of the breeding of the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase winner Ngatoa, who is returned as by Ngatitoa from a Leolantis mare, the contention in certain quarters being that the gelding was got by Brookby. There is apparently an inaccuracy in Ngatloa's breeding in the Turf Register). but not-in the direction expected. In the conrse of an interesting note on the subject, Mr. Albert G. Yardley, of Te Aroha, writes me as follows—• '' Be the doubt expressed as to the breeding of the New Zealand Grand National winner Ngitoa, I may say that I had the pleasure onlv on Friday last of having a talk with Mr. Handley, of Paeroa, who bred the horse, and he informed me that -Ngatoa was assuredly by Ngatitoa out of a King Quail mare. It has appeared in several journals that Ngatoa is out of a Leolantis mare ; but that is nob correct. Mr. Handley has four horses at present running on his farm which are from the same dam, and a couple of which are also by Ngatitoa. Mr. Handley at the time these were got owned the stallion, so it does not seem likely that he would put his mares to another horse. The doubt,, if any. would possible be in the age usually given to Ngatoa;" but on this j point i did not question Mr. Handley."
