MINERALS IN NORTH.
DEMAND FOR SURVEY.
WHANGAREI ■> TAKES ACTION*.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]
Whangarei, Thursday. It is thought that a thorough geological survey of this part of the country would yield valuable results, and last night the matter was prominently before the W hangarei Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr. H. C. worth, gave particulars of the recent flying visit of the Government geologist, Mr. Morgan. Mr. Morgan Ame north at the instance of the Agricultural Department, primarily to see if there were any prospcts of certain mineral deposits. He visited Tikorangi, Ruatangata, and Kanio, after which he went to Russell. When asked if he thought the Department could see its way to send him north to undertake a thorough survey of the district, Mr. Morgan could not hold out any hope- The Department had been scandalously starved, said the president. He thought that the chamber should persevere in asking for a thorough survey. The request had been made from time to time during the past eight years. Mr. Marshall moved that the Department be written to asking the reconsideration of the appointment of an officer to survey the district, the letter to intimate that the request for a survey had been made repeatedly. On the suggestion of Mr. Hempton, who said that the Puhipuhi district offered the best prospects of deposits being found, an addition was made to the resolution to the effect that, failing the possibility of a survey of the whole district, something be done in respect of the I'uhipuhi district. This was carried unanimously.
