MARKET PROPOSALS.
FISH DEPOT PERMANENT

N. Bagnall. P. J. Nerheny, J. Trevethick, R. T. Mi.hacls. Hall Skelton, P. M. Ma.kay, G. Baild>n. T. L. Thompson, G. J. Garland. J. W. Warnock. Edwin Cai-r, F. Brinsd'n, tnd W. Donald. The need for regarding trio fish market as a permanent business was emphasised by the, Mayor. It might be well for the council, he said, to consider the desirability of bringing the market more directly before the people by erecting I one or two retail depots in other partsof I the city. Continuing. Mr. Parr referred i to the main market scheme, pointing out ; that the site of 2A a. res secured from the ' Harbour Board was now lying vacant, and ; that the rent would be payable five | months hence. The occupiers of the old i market site were anxious to move into the | more commodious premises proposed |to be erected by the council. ' j and the scheme would no doubt have . ! reached a practical stage long ago had | lit not been for the outbreak of - wa}r. • I What he would advise the council to ' I do would be to secure the services of an expert with a view to finding out how ' : to lay apt the new markets to the best , I advantage. He understood that the man . in control of the Sydney markets was - | coming to New Zealand on holiday leave • : in about a month's time, and he would ! urge the count to take advantage of the I chance to secure such an expert's advice. ; I The proposal to secure the Sydney ex- > i pert's advice was left in the bands of • ! the Mayor and Mr. A. J. Entrican with • I power to act. I Referring to the fish market, Mr. P. 1 J. Nerheny remarked that if the council . | desired to make the venture a thorough , j success it should purchase half-a-dozen : fishing boats and hire them out to the I ■ fishermen in the same way as the private ■ : concern did. ' j Mr. A. J. Entrican, chairman of the I committee dealing with the fish market. ; remarked that the committee had several . : matters of detail under consideration at - i present. " j The city engineer was authorised to " | prepare sketch plans for, and estimates of ' ! the cost of, a permanent freezer as part j of the equipment of the fish depot.
MISCELLANEOUS.
FRUITERER'S COMPLAINT.
A fruiterer complained concerning the notice received from the chief sanitary inspector to cover exposed fruit displayed in his shop, in accordance with the bylaws. Several members of the council supported the complaint, in view of the fact that street hawkers were selling fruit in the main street from open barrows. The town clerk explained that the bylaws applied equally to the hawkers. The application of the Telegraph Department for permission to erect a slot telephone in front of the Methodist Church, Pitt Street, was granted. The waterworks engineer was instructed to lay water on at once to Titirangi Park. The special order authorising the raising of a special loan for the erection of workers' dwellings in Clarence Street, Podsonby, wxs cnn^-med. ,
