MAORI AND A CHEQUE.
KEEPING THE "FUN" GOING.
INCIDENT OF A LAND SALE. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Saturday. The operations of the native land purchase officer on the East Coast seem to be meeting with a fair amount of success. At all events cash appears to be plentiful and some good stories reach town concerning the lavish actions of certain of the Maori folk who are parting with thenland to the State.
One native in particular, who received a cheque for over £1000. immediately sent to Gisborne for a tasicar to brine him to town for the races. The latest advice respecting him is from Christchurch, where he has been living the life of a gentleman, but rumour adds that urgent "5.0.5." messages are flashing north to locate the whereabouts of the man with the cheque-book. Evidentlymore of the heritage is about to go into the melting-pot to keep the fun going.
