THEFTS BY NEW ARRIVAL.
SENTENCE OF TWO MONTHS.
"Although he may be a new arrival in the country, he has been pretty busy with other people's property," said Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., of George White, who was brought before him in the Police Court yesterday on several charges of theft. To the charges White pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily.
According to the chief detective the accused arrived recently in Auckland from the Old Country. He stayed at a boarduighouse and an hotel, from which places he stole a watch, money, and clothing. On the watch he raised" a loan of £1 and the clothes were sold. Subsequently, when the thefts had been reported "to the police, all the articles were recovered. H:s Worship sentenced White to two months' imprisonment with hard labour. MISCELLANEOUS. Five first offenders, convicted of insobriety, were fined 5s each, three of them having to pay half-a-crown cab hire in addition. Convicted of his third offence within the last six months, William Patrick Black was fined £1 and was also prohibited. Convicted of drunkenness and of a breach of his prohibition order, James William Roach, whose record, said the magistrate, prevented him from being sent to Roto' Roa, was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour. Having failed tp drive his motor-car round the corner of Jervots and Ponsonby Roads in the manner prescribed by the by-la W6, John Holman was fined 10s and „7s costs. Alfred James Waterworth was fined £1 and 7s costs for allowing his chimney to be on fire.
