THE GUM INDUSTRY.
ACTION BY GOVERNMENT. * LEGISLATION PROPOSED. [bt telegraph—special CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington - , Tuesday. xtte position of the gumdiggers on the Northern gumfields and the proposal of the Government in regard thereto at the present juncture, were again referred to in the House this evening by Mr. Reed (Bay of Islands). He asked whether the Prime Minister was yet able to announce "what the Government intended to do. Mr. Massey said that since he made his last statement on the matter, he had asked Mr. Greville, the gum commissioner, to come to Wellington. He had had several conferences with Mr. Greville, the Minister for Finance being present on one occasion. An agreement as to what should be done had been practically agreed to, and it had been sanctioned by the Cabinet. The proposals would require legislation, and a Bill had been drafted to give effect to them. All he could say at present was that the Government "had agreed to do all that was possible to tide the gum industry over the present crisis.
