GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS.
EMPLOYMENT PROBLEM.
Sydney, August 15. The Howard Smith Shipping Company donated £5250 to the Lord Mayor's' Patriotic Fund, which now totals £33,000. The Iron Trades Federation has called off all industrial disputes, and expressed readiness to assist the Government in any emergency.
Mr- I). F. Dcnham (Premier of Queensland), interviewed the directors of the Mount Morgan mine, who decided to continue work and to provide employment for all men.
The Perth Labour Federation is asking the Federal Government to provide for the wives and families of Imperial reservists called up, owing to the low pay which they receive.
The transport fleet comprises 20 vessels, including the Euripides, Medic, Cevic, Ascanius, Gcelong, Pera, Aorangi, Hymettus, Hawke's Bay, Borrima, Grantala, and Kanowna.
The Orient steamers, Orvieto, of 12,000 tons, and Omrah, of 8130 tons, have been engaged as troopships.
The trustees of tho Into Edward Wilson, part owners of the Melbourne Argus, have donated £10,000 for the alleviation of distress in Victoria,
The Brisbane Turf Club has voted £1000 to the Patriotic Fund.
