THE TIMBER TRADE.
HARBOUR BOARD SUPPLIES. ONLY ONE TENDEIi. , COMMENTS BY CHAIRMANThe question of tenders for the 6upply of New Zealand timbers was considered by the Harbour Board yesterday. The secretary reported that only one tender, that of the Taupo Totara Timber Company, had been received. Several other firms had written to say that they coold not tender, but were enclosing the list of prices current, Tiio chairman (Mr. Gunson) stated that the one tender received represented the printed list of the association. Leading :srma refused to tender and the board was not able to buy to advantage as it had done ii the past. He said there were .assuredly indications of a timber "ring." Mr. W. E. Hutchison remarked that it did not matter whether the board desired to purchase £100,000 worth of timber or only a small quantity, the price would lie the same.
The matter was referred to committee and the engineer was instructed to report upon the position.
