CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS.
DEATH AFTER TREATMENT.
A FANATICAL FATHER
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.
Times-Sydney Sun Special Cable. (Eeceived August 11. 6.30 p.m.) London, August 10. Tb:e inquest was resumed on Saturday on the body of a girl named Stroud, seven years of age"", who died after Christian Science treatment. A doctor some days ago stated that death was due to diphtheria. If the girl had been treated by modern methods, he held that she would probably have recovered. The deceased's father' gave evidence that the child appeared to be suffering from the mumps, and he telephoned to a Christian Scientist, who bestowed "distant" treatment. An immediate improvement followed and the witness thereupon telephoned to cease the treatment. The child afterwards became worse and died. Several doctors in their evidence said they were unable to state whether death was accelerated by the want of medical atterk.'ion. The jury, however, decided that any reasonable person would have summoned a doctor, aiad the failure to do so'hastened the death of the girl. The coroner stated that the verdict was tantamount to a charge of manslaughter. ' The father was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
