INDIAN RIVER FLOOD.
EMBANKMENT COLLAPSES. TEEEIBLE LOSS OF LIFE. THOUSANDS HOMELESS. ■ COMMUNICATION CUT OFF. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received August 11, 9.20 p.m.) Calcutta, August 10. An embankment on the Damodar Kiver in Bengal collapsed yesterday owing to the heavy monsoonal rains. Burdwan is several feet under water. Of the 30,000 inhabitants of the town and in the neighbourhood only 200 have reached the railway station. Terrible loss of life is feared. The railway line is submerged for 15 miles, thus cutting off all communication with the outer world. For miles around, the country is flooded. Thousands are homeless and starving. Numbers of houses have been washed away, and all the cattle have been destroyed.
