MAY QUEEN
The drive cast of the main crosscut on the Exchange roof at the 1000 ft level in the May Queen mine, Thames, has shown increasing gold and favourable minerals during the week, The manager states that at no time since tho mine was started have prospects been brighter, and anticipates a greatly improved reef when the cross reefs ar 0 intersected. 'In the stopes east of the crosscut the quartz is heavily .mineralised, and shows a little gold. The battery was started on Tuesday last. i
j THAMES DEEP LEVELS. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. The Victoria subsidiary crosscut at the 1000 ft level in the Thames Deep Levels has now been driven a total distance of 306 ft from the main crosscut. The country in the face is of a more open nature, and more resembles tho class of country which exists in the upper levels of the field, and is giving out a good flow of I water, which should gradually drain the upper levels in this portion of the field. The drive on the new reef, or what is now looked upon as tho footwall dropper, has : been driven a total distance of 19ft from the main crosscut. The reef in tho face still maintains the name size of about 4ft, and looks well, and the quartz obtained from this drive, amounting to 52 tons, has been put through the battery for tho return of gold to the value of £193. which is highly payable. The faco of this drive is about 120 ft westward of the point where the last patch of gold was obtained, and tho drive is being driven eastward so as to get under that point, and there is reasonable probability of further improvement taking place as tho work progresses. Tho crosscut at the No. 7 level, which is being driven to intercept the main reef, has been driven a total distance of 79ft from the main crosscut, and as yet the main reef has nob been met with. Tho quartz cut into at the early part, of tho week proved to bo a strong rib of flinty quartz, about 2ft in thickness. This has now been passed through, and the face has entered' into a favourable class of white sandstone country. It is impossible to form a correct estimate as to the exact position of tho reef at this point. It may be met with at any time, or it may still be some little distance ahead, the position of the reef at this level being regulated by its underlye between this and No. 6 level. NOTES. The manager of the Waitangi mine, • Tararu, reports that the assavs from the last sample from the main drive, which is now in 3757 ft, show slightly improved I ! values. * ]
