OTAHUHU'S £3000 LOAN

At a meeting of the Otahuhu Ratepayers and Citizens' Association on Friday evening, Mr. J. Salt raised the question of the Groat South Road, and a suggested im-

provement scheme. He said it lad been suggested that the different local authorities interested in tho Great South Road should combine to carry out an improvement of the road from Tamaki Bridge, Otahuhu, to the junction at Newmarket. The proposal was a very important one, and if the scheme could be carried out it would be of great benefit to the whole district. It would, be the most economical way of doing tho work, because only one engineer and, one plant would bo needed. It was estimated . that ' the improvement would cost about ,£3OOO per mile. The Otahuhu authority had borrowed £3000 for an improvement of the road, but to permanently improve the whole length of road in their district would cost not less than £4500.

Mr. R. L. Absolum, a member of the Borough Council, said the scheme was a good one. It was practicable, and it would be very beneficial, but it was a little premature. Tho loan of £3000 which the Otahuhu authority had obtained was for the specific purpose of improving the Great South Road within the borough, and in his opinion tho money could not be used to form part of a fund for carrying out a general improvement scheme. When they had expended the loan on their part of the road they might then, consider what further action should be taken. Mr. J. Carr said that if they waited for the local authorities to agree upon a general scheme they might have to wait 'nl I JS, 0< ?
