BOROUGH COUNCILS.

GREY LYNN.

The Grey Lynn Borough Council met last evening, there being present tho Mayor (Mr. W. H. Murray), Messrs. C. Norgrove, W. Donald, Geo. Baildon, J. A. Warnock, G. J. Garland, T. L. Thompson, F. Parsons, and J. W. Tattersfield. The general manager of the Tramways Company (Mr. J. J. Walklate) wrote stating that the company had put on a number of extra cars on the Grey Lynn service during tho busy hours. Mr. Baildon urged the need of a double line along the Great North Road. Mr. Norgrove and the Mayor said the company had already been asked to duplicate the line, but that the reply was not favourable. Mr. Garland said tho duplication of the lino from end to end would do more to relieve congestion than the putting on of an extra car or two. On his motion it was decided to again ask the company to duplicate the line. It was decided to grant permission to the Tramway Company to suspend the service on Good Friday on tho occasion of the annual tramway picnic. Tho borough engineer (Mr. H. Munro Wilson) forwarded a plan of a proposed cutting in Disraeli-street. It was decided that the work be carried out. A letter from Messrs. Rich and Dimery in reference to their offer to convey to the Council a strip of land facing King, Queen and Victoria Streets (Richmond) for the purpose of widening those streets was referred to the Finance Committee. A deputation of Uarcourt-Jtieet residents attended for tho purpose of protesting against the decision of the Council to. cut down a portion of that street. It was stated that only five ratepayers had expressed themselves in favour of cutting down tho street, and that six had expressed a contrary view. The town clerk stated that tho Council could not legally leave the street without cutting it down unless by the unanimous wish of the people in the .street. The Mayor said that the Council, after carefully considering the matter, had decided to "cut down the street. The construction of a blind street (which would bo the result if the cutting was not made) would be inimical to the interests of the borough. After some further remarks, during it which it was stated that the cutting down of the street must be proceeded with, the deputation withdrew. The following tenders for a steam road roller were receivedJ. and A. Anderson, Ltd., (Christchurch), £577 18s; W. A. McLaren and Co. (Christchurch), £610; E. Porter and Co., £570; J. J. Niven and Co., Ltd., £577; J. Chambers and Co., Ltd., £533. The tenders were referred to the Quarry Committee with power to act. A petition for the formation of Richmond Avenue, from the present tram terminus to Richmond Road, was presented bv Mr. Warnock. A deputation waited upon the Council in support of the petition, which was referred to the Finance Committee.
