NEWMARKET.

The Newmarket Borough Council met last night. Present Mayor (Mr. I). Teed), Messrs. A. E. Whittome, S. Donaldson, W. Fookes, C. Leek, Jas. McColl, and W. H. Hamblin. In reply to the- Council's complaint with reference to stray horses in the borough, Inspector Cullcn wrote stating that the matter would receive the attention of the police. The borough engineer (Mr. ,T. Rogers) wiote stating that it is proposed to commence the paving of Manukau Road immediately the alteration of water mains and necessary drainage works are completed. . He also stated that the Khyber Pass Road improvement could bo put in hand whenever the Council deems it expedient, hut that ho did not consider it advisable to commence this work until tho Carlton Core Road improvement is nearing completion. Mr. 11. 11. Metcalfe, civil engineer, wrote with regard to the Council's reticulation scheme, that with a few exceptions all tho house- connections aro now complete. W. Griffiths wrote stating that 100 tons of 2in lithofalt paving blocks have been shipped by the s.s. Kia Ora, and are due to arrive on March 24, this being the first part of tho Council's order.
