MINING NEWS.

MAY QUEEN.

The work of extending tho Bright Smile crosscut in tho -May Queen mine, Thames, was continued as usual last week. There is, however, very little change in the country, it being still of a hard nature. Tho total distance now driven is about 397 ft. The rise on the Exchange reef is up 37ft. Tho quartz, which is still of a rubbly nature, has shown gold freely during the past week. At No. 6 level the quartz coming to hand from the hangingwall branch leader in tho stopes continues to show gold at each breaking down. As tho payable quartz is extending ahead of tho end of the ground it is being followed with an intermediate drive about 35ft above the main level. WAIOTAHI. The manager of the Waiotahi Gold Mining Company reports for the week as follows:"No. 7 level: The drive east on the foot wall dropper is being continued, and is now in a distance of 44ft from the crosscut. ' Tho country is of a favourable character for gold, but tho reef is still a good deal disturbed. Tho 1000 ft level crosscut has now entered tho Waiotahi Company's ground, and I took over the supervision on Saturday last." NOTES. During last week three nice looking veins of quartz were passed through in the Monnataiari mine (Thames), varying in width from 2in to 4in, and carrying very good mineral. The winze in the Mount Welcome mine (Coromandel) is down 44ft. At the north end the reef has been small and carrying a false wall. This wall is now gradually disappearing, and quartz of a more favourable nature is coming to hand.
