MINING NEWS.

WATCHMAN. No. 1 rise in the Watchman mine, Thames, was advanced lift last week. For the last few feet the reef lias become •smaller, measuring about 36ft. At the bottom of the last round of holes fired there are signs of an improvement in size in tho south end. The reef at present measures 4ft, with gold showing through the stone. The faco of the northwest crosscut on the Parallel reef was advanced 9ft. The quartz referred to in the last report proved to be tho true hangingwall of th-js reef, measuring about 2ft Gin wide, with zinc blende and sulphides distributed through the stone, and occasionally a few colours of gold are seen.

WAIHI EXTENDED. The manager of the Waihi Extended mine, reporting for last week, states that the south-east crosscut was advanced 25ft in favourable country, making a total of 165 ft from the shaft. Tho winze on tho south-oast lode has been stink to 36ft below the No. 5 level. Tho winze is being carried down towards the foot-wall, although, go far, neither wall has been exposed in the winze. At the fortnightly sitting of the Thames Warden's Court, held to-day, the following applications were . dealt with New Champion Gold Mining Company, for six months' protection for the Champion North special claim granted. Thames Gold Mining Company, for six months' protection for the Thames special claim; granted. Albnrnia Gold Mining Company, for six months' protection for the Alburnia special claim ; granted.- • Karaka. Mines, Limited, for license for the Karaka No. 1, Karaka No. 2, Karaka No. 3, and Karaka No. 4 special claims of 100 acres each, situated at Karaka; recommended to the Minister. Saxon Gold Mining Company, for certificate of reduction to work the Saxon special claim with six men for six months; granted for nine men for six months. J. A. Thomas, for three months' protection for the Cambria special claim; recommended, lamia Mines, Limited, for exchange of title, for water-race, at Tairua; granted. J. W. A. Bertram, for license for the North . Star special claim of 56 acres at Thames ; granted. W. J. Comes, for license for the Goldwin special claim of 100 acres; recommended. C. Adams,, license for the Waitangi Extended No. 2 special claim of 42 acres at Tararu; recommended. A PROMISING REEF. fBT TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. Coromandel, Friday. Messrs. H. Gunn and Son, who have been working the Sunshine claim, which is situated at Tokatea, report having cut a new reef, showing good gold. The ore body is from Sin to 6in wide, and is running north and south, and at last breaking down ore of good value was obtained from the roof to tho floor of the drive. Tho claim is situated near the ! Mount Welcome mine.

DREDGING RETURNS. [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS association.] Dunedin, Friday. The following dredging returns are to hand:Koputai, 38oz lldwt; Karaunui, 350z sdwt; Electric 1., 260z 6dwt; Mastcrton, 19oz 2dwt. NOTES. . In Brcmner's Freehold mine, Coro&iandel, the reef is rather pinched at present, and no gold has been seen for the last 13ft of rising. The manager of the Occidental, reporting for this week, states that the No. 2 reef in the south drive was broken down on Tuesday. The stone is heavily mineralised with a few colours of gold showing.
