THE TAKABUNA MEETING. A SENSATIONAL AFTERNOON. TWELVE HORSES FALL. - A HALT CALLED. .— ; Racegoers rolled up in strong force on Saturday, despite the weather conditions, to view the second and concluding day's racing Of the Taknpuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The showers of the morning turned to heavy rain in the afternoon, mak- j ing ifc decidedly unpleasant for tho specta- j tors, while the race track became sloppy, j and unfit to race upon. Only four races | were decided, when a halt was called, but j those present were treated to a sorios of j thrills such as have seldom been experienced J on any racecourse. Proceedings opened with tho running of j the Kawau Hurdles, in which race Bon Cyr slipped while galloping on the flat, and fell. The Stanley Handicap passed without incident, but the Spring Handicap was responsible for a quartette of the starters coming to grief. Half-a-dozen horses were running almost in line behind Wee Olga, : going out of the-straight, when Sphinx (A j Whittaker) fell, bringing down Miss Livonia | (J. O'Sheu), and Maheno (M. Ryan), while \ a few yards further the favourite, Master Jack (J. Conquest), fell as the result of the . mix-up, and nearly brought down Sir Artegal. Sphinx skidded, and was dragged along for close on a chain, while her rider received a severe knocking about, and had to ,bo j carried to the casualty-room. M. Ryan was | badly shaken, but J. Conquest and J. Stock- j ley each got off with a shaking and some - bruises. Tho Vauxhall Handicap was even I more sensational, for six of the It starters fell in tho race, and one came clown in a collision after passing the post. Avalon (J. j Stockley) was first to fall, coming to grief at ; t!u turn going out of tho straight. The ; fillv fell on top of her little pilot, and slid j ! along for some distance with the lad under- j 1 neath. Tli© onlookers were shocked at tho \ ! sight, but to their relief Avalon eventually j I rolled over, and Stockley got up little the . ! worse for his experience. Lenella (E. Wil- j 1 son) next fell, and shortly after Cloudy \ Dawn (B. Oliver), .Miss Ada (A. J. Mc- ! , Flynn), Miss Jewel (Hall), and Rutter (0. j \ Brown) fell at. intervals. Miss Jewel came j j down on the back stretch, and as Hall was I rising he was knocked down by Rutter, who j ■ also toppled over. C. Brown, who at first i appeared to have got the worst of it, quickly rose to his feet, and went to little Hall's (an apprentice) assistance, and carried him off I the track, from whence he was removed in | the ambulance. Mr. E. W. Alison (president) and the stewards of the club met. immediately after the race, and decided that the remainder of tho programme must be postponed, a course that was on all sides appreciated, and approved of For the four races decided £7471 was invested on the machines, against £4694- for ! tho same number of races on the second day j I of last year, when, however, the bookmakers, j j were trasacting business. The following are | tho details of tho racing: — j KAWAU HANDICAP HURDLE RACE of lOOsots. j Over seven flights of hurdles. Ono mile and 1 three-quarters. • Mr. L. Sphinx here got into difficulties and fell, bringing down Miss Livonia, and then Maheno, while a few lengths further on Master Jack also fell. Rounding the bottom bend Blue Garment headed Wee Olga, and at the four-furlong post was six lengths in front of Sir Artegal, with Wee Olga and Oaedmon next. Crossing the top stretch Blue. Mauinma was quiokly out in front, and showed the way past the stand, followed by Cloudy Dawn,, Tiresome, Maria Regina, Belle Crispin, and Miss-Jewell. At the scene 'of the mishap in tho previous race, the turn going out of the straight, Avalon slipped, fell, and skidded along on her back for some yards, with her rider (Stockley) underneath. Lenella then came to grief, while a few chains further on Cloudy Dawn slipped and fell, followed by Miss Ada, Mauinina continued to show the way along the back, where Miss Jewel lost her feet and came down, bringing Rutter with her. Racing across the top Mauinina held a strong lead over Tiresome, Maria Regina, and La. Reina, and was first to round for home.
