PARKS FOR THE PEOPLE.
AUCKLAND'S EXAMPLE. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Sunday. The example set by the wealthy citizens of Auckland in providing recreation grounds for the people was warmly commended by the Hon. T. Mackenzie in the House of Representatives on Saturday morning. Mr. Fisher (Wellington Central) asked if the Government intended to acquire and preserve the Day's Bay bush, one of the popular resorts of Wellington people. The Minister replied that the area of bush was large, and the owners would no doubt demand a big price for it. He suggested that the citizens of Wellington might emulate the generosity of those of Auckland, and present the bush to the city. Mr. Fisher: Would you give a subsidy of £1 for £2? Mr. Mackenzie said Jie could not make any promise of financial assistance, though he would be glad to give his assistance in any movement to secure so fine an asset for the city.
