TOWN PLANNING.
iii _ apropos of town planning I would like to draw attention to a matter which if only a detail, is worth the notice of local authorities. The Mount Eden Council ia rearranging many of its side streets upon. wt f SIS -j° a „ lsft sidewalk— vou have 30ft of sidewalk Mcl 56ft of roadway. Tha effect from the point of view of appearance is excellent, as. may be seen in the case of streets already so arranged, while the mating of the roadway becomes much mora within the means of the district, and the upkeep is correspondingly low, and the surfacing of the footway is a comparatively light matter. Thus handsome appearance is attained at a minimum cost, H.S. ,
j Sir,— thanks of the community are* due to you for the able article on the "above' subject which appeared in your Saturday'* issue. It is manifest that in the past th» laying out of streets, etc., in Auckland was* done m the most casual, not to say hap- ; hazard, fashion and without any. regard for the possible future requirements of the citv. From recent indications it was hoped that abetter system was now about to be inaugurated. But what can be said for the way m which the lower end of Queen-stret ha's been practically blocked up— use the word advisedly—blocked up by the hugo sheds recently erected and other Harbour Board buildings now under construction? Not so very long ago a pleasing view of the harbour and the North Shore could be obtained by_ tho wayfarer looking down Queen-street. This refreshing glimpse of the water is now completely obscured by the virtual over- 1 lapping of the above-mentioned buildings, and it makes the street appear as if it terminated in a cul-de-sac. That if is an injustice to property-owners in that locality (as well as to wayfarers), in that it impedes the much-needed circulation of air ia the hot and crowded thoroughfare, goes without saying. Mac.
