BOROUGH COUNCILS

GREY LYNN.

The Grey Lynn Borough Council met last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Holdsworth), Messrs. G. Baildon, H. Schoficld, W. Donald, G. J. Garland, C. Norgrove, T. L. Thompson, and W. L. Rowland.

A circular was received from the Chief Health Oflicer (Dr. Valintine) suggesting that until the Hospital Board had provided the necessary machinery to give effect to the amerdment in the law regard-

ing the control of infectious diseases the Council should continue to act as at present in regard to. any infectious diseases in the district. ISo resolution was passed on the subject. The city engineer wrote stating that during the last three months of last year the total car miles of tram lines watered by the Tramways Company's sprinkler in Grey Lynn was 139, and the total water used 223,280 gallons, of which 194,000 was drawn from the borough's supply, a further 29,280 gallons being taken from the city supply. ■

It was reported by the acting-foreman of works that tailing and sanding of lootpaths on the authorised list had been practically finished., lie recommended, however, that some, portions of Pollen and Beaconsfield Streets might be done. Mr. Baildon said there were several other streets that had been cut down for some years, but which had not yet been tarred. The question of whether tarring and sanding should be done on any additional streets was referred to the Streets Committee.

It was decided" that the engineer be asked to submit to the next meeting a scheme for spanning the gully in Sussexstreet. The Mayor stated that he was opposed to the suggestion that a temporary footbridge should be erected over this spot; any work done should be of a permanent, character.

Mr. IS' grove stated that arrangements had been made for placing an Ash ford litter at Richmond, and that it had been suggested that it might be stationed at the fire brigade station in that district. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Letters were received from the Archhill and Avondale Road Boards declining to contribute to the cost of the retaining wall on the Great North Road deviation. _ Mr. A. Rush wrote asking that the cutting down of Elgin-street be taken in hand during the present summer. The letter was referred to the Streets Committee. PARNELL. The Parnell Borough Council met last evening. Present: 'The Mayor (Mr. K. J. Briggs), Messrs. W. Johns, W. Thomas, G. bearboro, J. Brown, T. Bong, (J. I']. iPaJmer and F. Fitt.

The Parnell Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club , applied to the Council for an additional water sen-ice to their lawns in Manuka.ii Road. On the motion of the Mayor the matter was referred to the Waterworks

Committee. A letter was received from the Harbour Board stilting tluit a considerable quantity of street sweepings were being tipped over the cliff at Mechanics' Bay. It was pointed out this might possibly cause further landslips, and it was requested that all tipping on the site should cease. It was resolved to inform the Board that the Council took no responsibility in the matter, as they did not use the site as a tip. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved, "That the Harbour Board be requested to dedicate a strip of land fronting St. George's Bay Road for the purpose of increasing the. width of the street, which will be much required." A drainage contractor proposed, with the consent of the Council, to erect explosives magazines at Campbell Terrace on the beach and in the gully near St. George's Bay, Road, each magazine to hold about five cases of gelignite. It was stated that the contractor had already been using the. explosives without getting the necessary permission, and that the reports .had lately been disturbing residents in the vicinity. Both the town clerk and the building inspector informed the Council that they had told the contractor that/a permit was required, but he had not complied with the by-law. On the motion of Messrs. Thomas and Long it was resolved, " That the inspector be instructed to prosecute the contractor without delay." It was resolved to order a water-cart from Messrs. Geo and Potter at a cost of £54 10s. '

ONEHUNGA. Tho Onehunga Borough Council met last evening, when there were present : Messrs. John Rowe (Mayor), C. C. Davies, I. Lomas, T. H. Horn, A. S. Holmes, J. Stoupe, C. A. Osborne, R. Dillicar, W. Colledge, and H. A. Yockney (town clerk). On tho motion of the Mayor a resolution of sympathy was earned in silence and ordered to be conveyed to the relatives of exCouncillor W. R. Tole (who died on Saturday), to ex-Councillor Jas. Williams on the loss of his daughter, to ex-Councillor Jas. Glanfield on the loss of his eldest son, and to the borough inspector, Mr. George' Cutts, on the death of his wife.

A -signed petition was received from residents of Te Papapa praying that batliing sheds be erected on the beach near Waikaraka Cemetery. The petition was ordered to lie upon the table. The Secretary Marine Department wrote stating that Geddes's Basin was being conveyed to the Council under certain conditions. It was ; decided that the Council make the necessary application to the Lands Department for the title to the basin. The town clerk announced that he had prepared a rough estimate of the. financial position as it should sti nd at the end of tho working year, and that he anticipated having a surplus at that time. It was agreed to call for tenders for the removal of tho old reservoir shed and its re-erection as a borough workshop.

Mr. Davis gave notice to move at next meeting, " That the necessary steps be taken to close both St. Peter's churchyard and that of the Church of the Assumption against further burials," remarking at the same time that it was high time this was done.

' The Mayor gave notice of motion, " That tho Council consider the advisability of laying down a public bowling green on the military parade reserve."
