ROWING. "■.''• ■ " , ' NORTH SHORE CLUB'S "AT HOME.* The North Shore Rowing Club held art "' "At Hoirte" at the clubhouse, Devonport, on Saturday, to celebrate the opening of*l|j the season. The. lawn adjacent to tho house was packed with guests, the fair sex predominating. The visitors were well en- M tertained, for, in addition to afternoon • tea,-; supplied by a largo ladies' committee, a. •' string band rendered a programme of music. - A set of trial fours -was also held off tho clubhouse, for trophies provided by 'the president, Mr. W. J. Napier, and was won by a crew stroked by L. Hunt. Among tho ;> visitors were Mr. A. Kohn, a vice-president, :i Messrs. Reston and N. Mitchell ; (representing tho Auckland Rowing Association), and! representatives of the Auckland, St. s George's, and Waitemata Clubs. The St. George's Club made a fine showing, send- /; ing across four outrigger fours, a pleasure ■;■;■ boat, and a single scull. The wearers of ; the red and white hoops numbered over 2w. ? The opening ceremony was one of the ■ most successful yet held. Mr. Napier acted Jas V judge and Mr. E. C. Wykes as starter for * the trial fours. The secretarial arrange- ij-f ments were carried out by Mr. R. A. Spin* i ley. The following are the results of the rao- :■
ing: — >.< ' First heat: W. Logan (stroke), F. Bennett, E. McDonald, and R. Johnston, 1; R. Spinley's crew, 2. Won by a length, after leading from the start. Second heat: G. Seagar (stroke), W. Ruesell, L. Fraser, and Duncan, 1. H. Grubb's crew was second, and Davies' third. This was a good heat, and was won by a baro length. Davies' coxswain steered an erratic course, and almost ran his boat into tho wharf. - - h;.'.-.:»

From a fair start "V Hunt's crew shot away, and when the boats came into view was leading from Logan."'': Seagar put in a claim, but Hunt stalled off the challenge and won the best race of tho day by a bare length from Seagar, who was a half length in front of Logan. WEST END ROWING CLUB. /.„. . *y Tho West End Rowing Club held a. get - ( of subscription fours off the clubhouse, St. h Mary's Beach, on Saturday afternoon. The .*-' set, which wa.s run off in three heats and a final, resulted as follows: —First heat: G. S. Mitchell (stroke), R. McDonald, C. ' ,' Tyler, W. Cranch, V. Bailey (cox.), 1. ; ! Second heat L. Vere, Culpan (cox), 1. ,-.;* Mitchell's, Dixon's, and Blomfield's crews j competed in the final, and after an exciting race Mitchell's crew passed the winningpost about a quarter canvas length in front of Dixon's men, who beat Blomfield's crew for second honours by about half a canvas. \> A coxswain's race was also held during 'the . . afternoon, and resulted in a win for A. A fairly strong north-east wind was blowing at the commencement of the race, and freshened tor \ wards the finish, the result being as follows:—Venus (Bm.), 1; Mowai (Bm.), 2; taldora (10m.), 3; Konini (13m.), 4. ' The club also held a motor launch race in the harbour, the winner being the Celtic, with a handicap of 30m. WAITEMATA DINGHY CLUB'S RACE. ' The Waitemata Dinghy Sailing Club hold a class raco on Saturday for 14ft boats. The course was from the starting point by tho cable steamer Iris, twice _ round the ■ usual club course. The four entrants started on a fresh, north-east breeze at 3.10. The* Olivine won easily, Tamure being second. Tho following is tho result:—Mr. N. Inglis* , Olivine, 4h. 36m. 555., 1; Mr. R. The wind, v which was from, the* north-east, made the sea choppy, but, nevertheless, ; some interesting racing was witnessed. The first event was for motorboats under seven knots, the course being six and a-half knots. The ' finish was: ■•■■'; Simms, 3m. 505., 1; Nelson, 6m., 2; Marofe, . scratch, 3- Simms was disqualified, and the " first prize was awarded to Nelson, the second to Marore, and the third to Diono (lm. 305.).
