WHAT NAPIER POLICE WANT.

SITTINGS OF THE COMMISSION.

[BT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Napier, Tuesday. The Police Commission sat here to-day. The evidence was mainly on the lines of that given elsewhere.

Constable Wilton said that the promotion of district clerks had caused dissatisfaction, and it was suggested that they should be employed as a clerical force only.

Sergeant Folley complained of sergeants having to travel second-class, whilst junior cadets of the Civil Service were allowed first-class fare. , Men should not be given the option of refusing promotion.

Sergeant Button complained of the difference in the rates of pay allowed to sergeants (6s), and detectives (8s), when on special expeditions.

Mr. Dinnie, the Police Commissioner, stated that the grievance with regard to steamer fares was now being remedied.

Inspecter Dwyer (Napier) said that he did not think the rate of pay was sufficient to induce good men to join the force. He regarded the district clerks as the most responsible men next to the inspectors, and ho did not think they or their assistants should be put on Sunday duty. He thought, for the sake of the harmony ot the force, it would be better to make district clerks a special allowance, and not promote them to sergeantships over other men. The channels of promotion should be open to detectives, allowing for merit. The hearing of the evidence was concluded, and the Commission adjourned.
