EAST COAST RAILWAY.

VISIT OF INSPECTION.

MOIU "IN SIGHT. *«

[BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.]

Gisborne, Tuesday. The party which accompanied the Hon. J. Carroll on his visit of inspection to the railway works near Gisborne returned thoroughly impressed with the magnitude of the undertaking, and with a realisation that the railway is now more than halfway to Motu, and is making really good progress. The railway is now running to Waikohu (23 miles), and. beyond that is an unopened section of a little over three miles, which terminates at the Waihuka tunnel. A small station will bo erected hero that will serve the people of the Wharekopae and Tahora districts, who are endeavouring to obtain access to the railway. The permanent way, however, is now laid (unballasted) for a distance of a mile and a-half beyond the tunnel. Another fortnight will see three more miles practically ready for traffic, which will be a total of 26 miles and a-quarter to Waihuka tunnel.

"As one of the community," remarked the Hon. J. Carroll, "I cm as pleased as anyone with the progress made with the railway. One admires'the faith of the people in the work and its construction, of the magnitude of which many townspeople who have not seen it are quite unaware. A further question to come some day will be that of feeding lines. So far as our East Coast district is concerned, there is no question as to the way the work is going. Motu is in sight."
