DEER OUT OF SEASON.
POACHERS FINED IN NELSON.
[BT TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION.]
Nelson. Friday. At the Magistrate's Court today five residents of Tatimor and Motupiko districts were prosecuted for taking deer out of season. They pleaded guilty, and counsel for the Acclimatisation Society asked for substantial penalties, owing to the extreme difficulty in securing evidence and conviction in very scattered districts, whore poaching was very rife. The magistrate inflicted a fine of 10s on one offender, and 5s on etlch of the others, with costs, totalling 28s 6d, added to each fine. The magistrate said he dealt with p the men with exceptional leniency, as they had pleaded guilty, but it should be a warning to others that in the event of a conviction heavier penalties would be imposed. On a second count defendants were convicted on their plea of guilty, and were ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. _______________
