BREEDING TYPHOID.
COX'S CREEK SEWER. A deputation of the Grey Lynn Borough Council waited on the City Council last night, with reference to the question of the outfall sewer at Cox's Creek. . The Mayor of the Borough (Mr. W. J. Savers) said the Council desired to know if an arrangement could be come to whereby, the nuisance caused in the locality (which was vested in the Grey Lynn Council as a reserve) might be obviated. At present two' open sewers were pouring out the drainage of a. very large area of Po'nsonby on to the mud flats. In addition to these, Grey Lynn had three small outfall sewers at the same . place, making five sewers pouring in drainage day and night on to this small area. It whs ominous that there had been an outbreak of typhoid not far away. To improve matters his Council suggested (1) that the City Council ehoukl proceed at once to lay 21in pipes from their present outfall to a line corresponding to that of the Grey Lynn outfall, at 'the expense of the City Council ; (2) that the City Council and trie Grey Lynn Council's 'sewers-he connected by .a larger pipe and carried out- to a- reasonable distance, each Council to contribute hair cost. In offering these suggestions •the Council was not- unmindful of the fact, that under the new drainage scheme, after 1923, they would not be allowed to empty sewage into the harbour, but it was thought that ,'the present' needs were urgent. Other members of the Grey Lynn Council endorsed the Mayor's remarks.. Mr. Parr : How would these sewers connect with the main scheme,? The Engineer said it would not bo possible to fit in the proposed joined sewer. Before the new drainage scheme was much advanced, however, it would be necessary to have .some means of disposing of the storm water at this point. It would be a costly undertaking, but it would have (to be done- if the recreation ground was to be availed of. The; engineer was requested to furnish an exhaustive report on the matter to the Works Committee, who will then confer with the Grey Lynn Council regarding the maite;.
