POLICE COURT NEWS.
CHARGE AGAINST A TRAMWAY EMPLOYEE. ~ At the Police Court yesterday, before Messes.' W. Morgan and J. McLaughlin, justices of the peace, James Percy Parkhurst, a young married man. employed by the Auckland Tramways Company as a, carsweeper at the Epsom bam, was charged with having, on or about June 4, stolen a number of tram tickets, valued at £7 12s 3d, the property of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company. ."• Detective P. T. McMahon. who "appeared for the prosecution, applied for a remand for eight days, .stating that the accused bad' only been arrested on Wednesday, and it would take some time to prepare the case. Parkhurst raised no objection- to the remand, which was granted. Bail was allowed, ia two sureties of £50 each, and" accused in his own bond of £100. SEAMAN IN TROUBLE. Leonard Watson, a member of the crew of the Union Company's steamer Atua, was charged, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., "that on June 3, while on the high seas, he was 'guilty of wilfully disobeying the 'awful commands of the chief officer. H. H. Williams." Mr. Symons prosecuted on behalf of the Union Company, and Mr. A. E. Skelton defended. Mr. Skelton pleaded not guilty on behalf of the' defendant, and applied for a remand until Saturday- He complained that, although the steamer arrived from the- Islands on Wednesday morning, and the. alleged offence took place on June 8, the defendant was put to work on the vessel, and was not brought before the Court until yesterday afternoon, when he was arrested on a warrant, and lodged in the. police cells. Sergeant Hendry said the police received a warrant, and executed it, Mr. Kettle said that as far as the- police were concerned "-here was nothing irregular about the aribst. Mr. Symons raised no objection to the remand, which was granted. The defendant was allowed to go free on promising' to appear at Court on Saturday. MISCELLANEOUS. A ydung woman, answering to the name of* Lena. Marsh (alias Nellie Wright), was charged with disorderly conduct while drunk in Queen-street, with using obscene language, and with accosting people in Cook-street. Evidence was given in support of the charges, and the accused was convicted, and fined £5. and costs 6s, or in default three months' imprisonment. The young man Corbett Richard Cresswell, who was charged last week with trespassing on the licensed premises of the Royal Hotel, and remanded for medical observation, was further remanded for a week. Two first offenders were .each .fined 5s and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness: two others 10s and costs, or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and another,' who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit the amount of bail (£1).
