THE SAN JOSE SCALE.
[Bf TELEGRAPH.—OWN COKBESI'OXDEXT.] Wellington", Thursday. The San Jose scale, which lias broken out in Nelson orchards, is the black cloud on the horizon of the present season. San Jose scale attacks various trees, and is regarded as the most destructive of all the scale insects. Its fecundity is extraordinary. It does not lay eggs like the aphis, but gives birth to living young. The birth-rate is so rapid and the youth reach bearing age so early, that it is estimated that the offspring of ■", single pair in one season may number a billion. * The lime-ealt-Bulphur mixture and soluble oils (one and 12) are the weapons gene- j rally used against the pest and the applications of these preparations are made frequently during the dormant period. The scale, if unchecked, quickly sticks out the vitality of the branches of peach and other trees, _ and poisons them, killing the tree 'sometimes in 12 months. The San Joso scale travels from tree to tree, and from orchard to orchard, and from, province to province, on the feet of birds. :
