Tub monthly meeting of the Wnihi Hospital Trustees was held last evening, Mr, John Xewth (chairman) presiding. .Mr. John Irvine, the nominee of the Borough Council, was elected a member of the Board to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Thomas Giimour. i! was decided to place on record tin appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the hospital by flic late chairman {Mr. Gilmour), who was one of the original members of the institution, and was for some years chairman of the board of trustees. The town clerk wrote advising that £250 of the Borough Council's grant of £1500 for the maintenance of the hospital for the year 1908-09 hat! been placed at the disposal of the trustees. The report of the medical superintendent (Dr. Robertson), which was adopted, pave the patients admitted as 51. discharges 55. operations 11, deaths nil, and patients remaining: at the end of May as 50. Accounts totalling £255 16s 4d were passed for payment. Mr, (.!. \V. Allsop. architect, submitted estimates for a new operating theatre (£410), hot water installation (£160), and septic tank (£6O). It was decided to apply to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for a special grant to carry out these works. At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day (Mr. F. J. Burgess, S.M., presiding), * the action of M. A. Tierney v. Thomas Tierncy and D. J. Dtirie, in which claimant sought to recover £111 12s 7d from defendants for services rendered and money lent, was continued. Judgment was entered for the plaintiff for £20 12s 6d and costs. £4 7s 6d. THAMES. [ItV A'PJ!. —OWN COIinKSi'OJCDEXT.] Thames, Tuesday. The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital Trustees was held .last evening, the Right Rev. Monsignor O'Reilly in the chair. The surgeon's report gave the number of patients in the wards as 50 males and 16 females; number admitted during the month, 26. males and 32 females; discharged, 27 males and 9 females; deaths, 3 males; out patients, 25 males and 15 females: attendances, 240 nudes and 74 females; operations, 10. Regarding consumptive shelters the House Committee reported that arrangements had been entered into with Mr. Currie, architect, of Auckland, to undertake the supervision of the" work. WHANG AREI. [BY TELEGRAPH".OWN' CO RESPONDENT.] WiiAXGAitKi, Tuesday. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor presiding over a full meeting of councillors. The clerk of the Court wrote stating that he had no authority to pay the fire brigade's claim ,of £2 7s 6d for services on the occasion of a false alarm of fire at the Courthouse. After considerable discussion, a motion to the effect that the clerk of the Court be held responsible was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. The health officer gave notice of several cases of scarlet fever in. Whangarei and Hikurangi, and proper precautions to prevent its spread had been taken. The matter of the claims of the competitors for the prizes offered for the best drainage scheme was left in the hands of the Legal Committee and the borough solicitor, with power to act. Mr. Harrison brought up the matter of electric lighting for Whangarei, and moved, "That the Mayor, the mover, and any other member prepared (o go at his own expense proceed to Waihi and To Aroha to obtain the . fullest information on electric lighting, and that on their return a special meeting be called to go into the question of drainage, electric lighting, and power." The resolution was carried. Reports of the waterworks engineer and of the Finance Committee were dealt with and adopted. A social in aid of the building fund of the Presbyterian Church, promoted by the ladies of the Sewing Guild, drew a large audience last night. An excellent programme was presented, an item of physical drill by natives of the Olamatea Mounted Rifles being particularly well received.
HAMILTON. [FROM OUn OWN CORRKBPOKDBUT,] The T.i.uwhare Hal] was crowded last Friday evening with the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Roche and Mr. and Mrs. Jockways, who arc about to leave, the neighbourhood. Mi'. Roche, who has sold his farm of some 800 acres to Mr. G. Howie, has been one of the directors of the Eureka Dairying Company since it started operations, and acted as chairman for the past year. Mr. Jack ways has been factory manager since the company started work. Dancing commenced at a o'clock, and at 10 o'clock Mr. Hinton, who acted as chairman, asked Mr. A. Ramsey to make a small presentation to Mr. Roche. Mr.. Ramsey spoke highly of the services Mr. Roche had rendered, and on behalf of the suppliers to the butter factory he asked him to accept a barometer, which bears the inscription, Presented to John Roche, Esq., by his fellow .settlers. Eureka, May, 1908." Mr. Roche returned thanks. Mr. Roche .then presented Mr. Jackways with a smoker's companion, for which he returned thanks, and several of those present made complimentary speeches. CAMBRIDGE. Kali, Cambridge, on Saturday, the president (Mr. John Fisher) presiding and 50 members being present- The chairman read the annual report and Mr. F. J. Brooks submitted the.bal-ance-sheet, both disclosing a (satisfactory state of affaire. Toe report and balance-sheet were adopted, 'file following officers were elected:— President, Mr. John Fisher (re-ejected); vice-pre-sident, Mr. .James Tavlor (re-elected); committee, Messrs. J.
