BOROUGH COUNCILS.

DEVONPORT. A MKETIXG of the Devonport Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Hundley) and Messrs. D. W. McLean, R. H. Fronde, W. U. Timewell, 11. Wilding, T. W. Cranch, (}. A. Gribbin, E. .1. Osborne, I.'. W. MeCallurn, and Captain G. McKenzie. The Water Question: A representative deputation of residents and property-owners in the Tukapuna. district waited on the Council and requested that it should re-consider its decision thai water from its mains should in future only be supplied to consumers living outside the borough by measurement. Mr. E. W. Alison. M.P., headed the deputation, and pointed out that under the proposed new regulation the poorest resident would be obliged to pay a minimum charge of £3 per year tor water, in addition to purchasing a meter. It appeared as jf the excessive use. of water by a few residents was causing the bodv of the people to suffer. Mr. Alison then handed in a requisition signed by 80 people, asking that the matter be reconsidered. The Mayor said that the Council desired to accord the residents of Takapuna lair treatment, and alter discussion it was resolved that, the Waterworks Committee should reconsider the question. Stanley Bay 'Bus Service : The proprietor of the Stanley Bay 'but service intimated his intention of abandoning the run, as he was not making it. pay. The Mayor said that this would no doubt inconvenience residents, but he expected that someone would soon take the service up again. Queen's Parade Sea Wall: The recommendation by the Streets and Works-Committee that the work of erecting a sea, wall at Queen's Parade be proceeded with without delay, provided that suitable timber can be obtained' from the' Auckland Harbour Board, was adopted. NORTHCOTE. 'flip ordinary meeting of the Northcotc Borough Council was held last night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. A. Bruce), Messrs. J. Broadv, .1 P.. Tonar, W. \. Rushbrook, A. E. Greenalade, H. 11. Hunt. P. W. Holland, James Dykes, D. A. Gray, and George Fraser. Sanitary Service : .Messrs. J. Burke and Co. wrote intimating their intention to discontinue the sanitary service at the end of the month. It was resolved to call lor tenders for the work. Fire Brigade: It was decided to leave the matter of the formation of a fire brigade to a committee consisting of Messrs. A. ' Bruce, H. 11. Hunt, A: K. Greeuslade, and J. Broadv, who'will call a public meeting at an early date to enrol volunteers. Engineer: It was resolved' to .-a!! for applications lor the position of engineer to the borough. Overhanging Trees and Hedge? : The Inspector reported the names ot owners and occupier? of properties where trees and hedges encroached upon the footpath. It was resolved to take action to compel those whose trees or hedges were a nuisance to trim them back to the boundaries
