WEST COAST MINES. [HV TELEGHAPH. I'HESS ASSOCIATION.] v Reeftox, Tuesday. The new Big River Company has declared a dividend of 2s per share, and the Factolus a dividend of Is per share. NOTES. The secretary of the Tairua Golden Hills mine (Mr. Win. Gray) yesterday received a telegram from the manager stating that he" had struck a reef in the low level. The manager of the Dominion mine contemplates making a start shortly by prospecting on a likely looking reef, which is situated at the northern end of the property. The reef in the eastern face of the Temple Bar mine has improved in appearance, and it is anticipated that another Bft of driving will meet the junction which made gold in the upper level. In the Ready Bullion mine the manager last week drove north and south on the reef at No. 1 level, taking samples every sft. The dirt going north prospected very well, but the other was not. so good. A telegram received by the secretary of the Tairua Extended mine (Mr. H. Giliillan, jun.) yesterday afternoon from 'he mine manager stated that he "had just struck.:! reef, but had not yet ascertained its size or value. Prospecting is being carried on in the southern portion of the Brilliant Block mine, with satisfactory results. The drive to intersect the main Champion lode is now in 50ft, and the country passed through is of a favourable character. An intermediate drive has been started "ii Woods' leader in the rise in the Tokatea. mine 17ft below where the tributers got their gold. In breaking down the leader gold could be seen in the. stone, but nothing in the way of picked stone has yet been met with. With a view to better progress (No. 2 reef at No. 3 level in the Tairua Triumph mine being somewhat difficult to break), the manager has commenced to drive along the footMall of the reef, and in breaking down a portion of the latter some good-looking stone was obtained. During the week the stopes at the Golden ; Belt mine have been worked as usual, and ; 80 tons have been treated for a yield of 530z of hot water amalgam. A start has been made with the rise over the level at the Bluffs, and it. is now tip 6ft, and will be pushed on continuously with three shifts. About 35 tons of ore from the Waitckauri mine have been carted to the battery, and it is expected that, the remainder will be delivered as soon as the road is repaired. The laying of the tramline into the face, of No. 6 level has been completed, and as soon as some of the decayed timbers have been replaced a start will bo made to drive on the reef. A reef 2ft bin wide has been cut in a surface drive in the Silver Hill mine, and three samples which were assayed each went over £13 per ton. A start is being made to drive on the reef. The country in tho low level continues light, and progress is slow. A reef 3ft wide, composed of quartz and black and brown flint, has been intersected, and its presence is regarded as a good sign. The manager of the Champion mine reports that; the deviation in the course of the battery level, rendered necessary owing to difficulties encountered in the face of the tunnel, has proved successful, and the men are now parallel with the- point in the level
where work had to be suspended. The country is firmer, and the amount of water; to contend against is small. The assay plant is now to hand.
Owing to it being necessary to timber up the drive on the Queen level in the New AVaitekauri mine slow progress is being made, but the lode continues to prospect well. The leading stope is now along 25Tt. and the lode maintains its size, and still shows good prospects by pounding. The rise is now up to the required height for the second stope, but the ore there does not prospect so well as that a few feet further south. The manager of the Mount Zeehan mine reports that the sido of the drive on the hangingwall of the big reef has been opened up for a distance of lift. This reef is lying very flat, with a strong dtp to the west, and i.s carrying a good deal of pug on the hangingwall, and making very little water. If the pug should cut out and the country rock make on to the reef he considers that it should have a beneficial effect, and there would be every reason to expect an increase in values. The drive on the new reef in the Tairua Broken Hills mine has been extended a further 20ft, and the reef in the face having shown no improvement in> values, it has been decided to stop driving for the present and put, up a rise on the reef where the best. values ill the level were passed through. This will prove the reef upwards, and also open up blocks for stoping. Driving northwards on No. 1 reef from the shaft has been resumed, and the reef looks well and carries payable ores. During the week ending May 28 100 tons of ore. were treated at the battery for a return of 1370z of amalgam, making a total of 6070z for tin.- month.
