ARBITRATION COURT.

THE RECENT DISPUTES. THE Arbitration Court has forwarded two moro of its awards in connection with the disputes heard at Auckland. They are as follows: — ENGINE-DRIVERS. Hours and Overtime: The week's work to consist of 48 hours. Overtime to be at the rate of time and a quarter tor the first three hours, and time aim admit' thereafter. Only ordinary time to be jraiu lor overtime wi rUecl in repairing a breaKdown, causing the stoppage of a factory- Work on. isew years Day, Easter Monday, and. the King's Birthday to ho paia for at time and a-haii; on Christmas Day, Good Friday, ana .Sundays at double rates; and time and ii-uu.it' for other Holidays. Exemptions: 'Workers engaged in the preparation of any daily newspaper are exempted. The award not to apply in respect of the wages of workers already brought. under an award, nor to engine-drivers in dairy factories, freezing works, gasworks, to any vessel, and those engaged in connection with the power-house in the Auckland electric, tramway service. The city corporation is exempted as regards its waterworks, destructor, and electric lighting plant. Tho New Zealand and the Wilson Portland Cement, Companies are also exempted. The award is not to apply to employers in the Poverty Day district, which is outside the boundary. Wages: Drivers of stationary engines who are in charge of any boiler (inclusive of the time of setting up steam), to receive a wage of 3.0 a a day, where the man is the holder of first-class certificates, and for a holder of second-class certificates. 9s.

Special Conditions: For locomotive, traction, and winding engine-drivers, whether the men hold certificates of service, or of competency, or whether the certificates are first or second-class:— hours weekly, exclusive of getting up steam time, the daily hours to be fixed by the employer; 10s a day wages. Owners of traction engines used in agricultural work of processes may contract with their workers for payment at tonnage or piecework, irrespective of the hours worked on any day. The award, which includes the usual moderate and preference clauses, will remain in force until May 1, 1911. TYPOGRAPHICAL WORKERS. Wages: The weekly wage is £3 10s for day operators, for a seven-hour day, and £3 16a for night; overtime, one-third extra- For linctypists. piecework is to be 3d per 1000 with fat. and 3id without fat. Piecework is not to be put. into operation until the operator has earned 5 a minimum of £3 10s for the week of 42 hours. An extra rate to be paid on all type larger than brevier. Operators may be employed by the hour at the rate of la 8d per hour for day work and Is lOd for night work. Probationers' wages: £2 10s for day work and £2 16s for night work. If Christmas Day and Good Friday are given as holidays, they are to be paid for at time rates. Apprentices: No apprentice to be employed on a machine until he has had two years' instruction in the work of a- compositor; thereafter his apprenticeship to be continued until he has served four years on the machine. One apprentice for every four operators. ... • Speed test: The efficiency speed test' has teen fixed at 7500 ens Hand-setting: In the handwork section the wages are increased from £3 for day compositors and £3 6s for night compositors, to £3 t>a and £3 10s respectively for 18, hours' work. Apprentices' wages are fixed at 10s per week lor the first year. 15s for the second .'•ear. 20s for the third year, 23s for the fourth year, 30s for the fifth year. and. .£2 per week for the sixth year. Piecework rates are Is Id per 1000 ens for day work, and Is 2d per 1000 for night work. Other conditions are the. same as in the Canterbury award. Preference is granted under the usual conditions. Exemption: The present members of the Auckland Female- Typesetters' Union are exempted from the award, and shall continue under the- award of .Tune 6, 1500. Scope of Award: The award to apply to employers within 10 miles of the chief post office Preference Clause: The Christchttrch preference clause has been embodied in the award, altered only in that the union's employment book is to contain particulars of members within a radius of 10 miles, not 20 miles. The award comes into force, on June 22. and will remain in force until October, 1910.

The Arbitration Court will commence its' Christchurch sitting on June 15- The list comprises 31 enforcement cases, 10 disputes, one application for interpretation, and eight, compensation cases, the total amount claimed being £2400.
