FIRE AND THEFT.
PILFERING IN CHRISTCHURCH, ' [BT TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Ohristcetjrch, Wednesday. A good deal of. pilfering took place at the great fire on Thursday night, and at the Police Court to-day Peter and Edward Power were charged by the police with having stolen £5 worth of drapery, the property of the Wellington Woollen Company, and drapery valued at over £20, the property of Messrs. Goft Bros. The accused were remanded on bail. [EST TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ' Wellington, Wednesday. Detective Cassells yesterday arrested a man named George Barnes, who was endeavouring to sell a new pair of trousers in a second-hand shop. The man's room, on being searched, was found to contain boxes of goods to the value of £50, stolen from Messrs. Ross and Glendining during the recent Christchurch fire. The accused admitted the theft and was remanded to Christchurch.
