COST OF A TANGI.

MAORI CUSTOM AND THE LAW. [BY TELEGRAPH. — ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. The cost of the tangi over the late Tamahau Mahupuku was the subject of argument in the Supremo Court to-day. Mahupuku died early in 1904, and the tangi lasted for three or four months. Mr. Loashy, storekeeper, of Greytown, sued the Public Trustee, as administrator of the estate, for £111 3s 6d for goods sold and delivered in connection with the tangi. Mr. James, S.M., gavo judgment in favour of the plaintiff for £02 Is 6d.

iigainst that decision the Public Trustee now appealed, and the question which is being argued to-day is whether the administrator of the estate of a deceased native is liable for the cost of a tangi, or whether, according to Maori custom, the visitors to a tangi do not bring a certain portion of the food required.
