Wl-stport, Wednesday. The Arbitration Court completed two days' sitting here to-day. In the case of Frank Cullen v. West port Coal Company, claim £300, alleged permanent injury, £160 having been paid, the Court allowed £120 in a lump sum to complete payments. In the case Emily Leecc v. Westport Coal Company, claim £400 for the death of claimant's husband, the Court made an order thut one-third of the sum be paid to the widow, and the remainder to be placed in the hands of the Public Trustee, to administer for the widow and family.
The inspector of awards applied to the Court for the enforcement of the award compelling the Westport Coal Company to pay the driver in charge of the air compressor lis a day, instead of 10s paid by the company. Decision was reserved.
In th Dennis ton Coal Miners' Union v. Westport Coal Company, alleged breach of award for failing to pay 3d extra for alleged false or bad roof, the company agreed to pay the extra rate.
The Mokihinui Miners' Union and Seddonville Stale mine applied for an award. After several conferences a settlement, was amicably agreed to, and the Court will be asked to make an award accordingly. The Granity Miners' Union also applied for a new award. After hearing evidence on a number of disputed points, the Court reserved its decision.
In the case, Westport Coal Company v. Denniston Miners' Union, alleged breach of award, the miners themselves deciding to work only eight hours from bank to bank, the Court ruled that underground workers had to work eight hours at working face mines, being entitled to 8d per shift where their Wages were 8s or over per day, Gd where they were 6s, and 2d where they were less than 6s per day for travelling time, and stated that the Court had not yet decided what order it should make in the matter.
