PROSPERITY AND CHARITY.
[Kl- TELEGRAPH. KRESS ASSOCIATION.]
CifKistTOHURClr, Wednesday. At the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Charitable Aid Board to-day the chairmatt said it was to be regretted that in such prosperous times as New Zealand continued to enjoy, there should be the need for so much expenditure of public money on outdoor relief. It was to be hoped that the importance of the whole subject might soon engage the serious attention of the Legislature, and the experience Of the 22 years' operation of the existing Act be turned to good account in any proposed amendments, especially with regard to the liability now laid on district boards for the cost of maintaining a large number of children committed to the care of the State under the Industrial Schools Act.
