THE SUGAR INDUSTRY.

LARGE AUSTRALIAN STOCKS.

Owing to a curious combination of circumstances, a large stock of sugar has recently accumulated in Australia. ■■ Last season's local output exceeded the consumption, but, in spite of this fact, considerable quantities of sugar were imported from Java, with the result that, making allowance for increased | consumption, there remained for the coming j sugar season a surplus of 40,000 tons.

This matter caused considerable concern

to the Queensland growers, who recently protested to the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir John Forrest) against the unfair competition, which, they alleged, they met with through sugar produced by cheap coloured labour in Java being imported into Australia.' Shortly afterwards Messrs. Poolman and Co., the firm that had imported Javaj sugar; largely, sold their refineries to the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, and this led to the assumption that the imports of Java sugar would ' cease. ' ■■.-'.! Confirmation of this is now forthcoming. It seems that last year's local output was considerably under-estimated, and that, in addition to the sugar imported from Java by Messrs. Poolman and Co., a considerable tonnage was also imported by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company. This company has, it is stated, resolved to cease importing foreign sugar, so that the cause of the anxiety shown bv the Queensland, planters has been completely removed. In order to get rid of the surplus stocks large shipments' aro being made to South Africa, and the season will open with f. clean page. , Reports have reached Melbourne of contemplated increases of sugar duties by the South African Customs Union, in order to protect Natal sugar from Australian competition. It has been represented .to the Natal Government that, in addition to the present shipments of sugar from Australia; further shipments may be expected later in the year, and this matter is new occupying tho attention of the South African Governments. .., «. : : „.....,
