The members of the Mutual Improvement Association and a large number of friends were entertained on Wednesday last by the reproduction of several portions of "The Merchant of Venice." Mr. R. Hames introduced the subject, and related the connective parts. The dialogue between Portia and Nerissa was given by Miss Hames . and Miss McCarroll;. the interview between Antonio, Bassanio, and • Shylock was rendered by Messrs. W. Hook, H. Hook, and iJ. Masson; • and in the court scene, Mr. Trounson presided as :the Duke, the Rev. Mr. Keall took Antonio's part, and Mr. H. Hook Bassanio's, while Mrs. Dukes represented Portia, Mr. Stephenson Gratiano, | and Mr. Hames Shylock. The interest was j well sustained throughout. _ j In tho scouts' competition, during the camp of the 0.M.R., the' prize offered by 'Captain Webster was added to by Messrs. Skelton, Millington, Birtles, and Hook, making in all £5 ss; while tho second prize of two guineas consisted of a donation by Mrs. Ariell (one guinea), and contributions by the officers. Corporal H. McCarroll was the winner of the first' prize. A gilded sixpence was passed for half asovereign the other evening in one of our business places. ' * / •,
