THE EDUCATION QUESTION. NONCONFORMISTS DEMAND- I ING ACTION. By Telegraph.— Association.— London, May 31. The Nonconformist members of the House of Commons have met and passed a sweeping resolution, :in which they demand that the Government shall proceed with the Bill of the Secretary for Education and pass a more aggressive Education Bill than Mr. Birrell's before the end of] the present Parliament. The Nation, commenting on the ■ Nonconformist fretfulness, says "We shall not use the word failure in regard to the Government's work \ we shall only say the administration has not had time to succeed." Mr. McKenna's Bill is popularly known as the Passive Registers' Bill. It provides,) in the case of denominational schools, that a j fifteenth of the salary of each teacher shall be returned to the local authority as payment, for the time of the teacher in giving religious instruction. The aim of this provision is to remove the conscientious objection of ratepayers to paying for the teaching of doctrines with which they disagree. ■ : AUTUMN SESSION DEMANDED. London, May 31. The Standard says that the members of the Labour party are demanding the holding of a session in the autumn to deal with social reforms.
