CENTRAL AMERICAN TRAGEDY.

ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE A

PRESIDENT.

A DESPERATE FIGHT.

•By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. Guatemala, May 23. Four men attempted to assassinate the President of Guatemala (Don Manuel Cabrera) yesterday. Having failed they fled and took refuge in an empty house.

Troops surrounded the house, and the conspirators fired upon them and killed or wounded three officers of high rank. The four would-be assassins then committed suicide. •

This is the third attempt during the present month to assassinate Don Cabrera. On May 1, as he was driving through the city, a bomb was thrown at his carriage; he escaped, but an officer with him and his coachman were injured. A few days \ater it was found that a mine : was being dug towards his house, with a view to blowing it up, and it was discovered only in time to prevent a disaster. In April General Barillas, an ex-President -f Guatemala, was assassinated in Mexico city.
